Something for everyone
Welcome to the first Bognor Regis Music Festival, run by Bognor Regis Town Council. In setting up the Festival, the Council have tried to bring together the various venues and music groups and performers around the town.
Saturday 29th will provide an afternoon of Music on the Bandstand in Hotham Park but the other performances are taking place in venues, ranging from the Hotham Arts Centre (Alexandra Theatre) to the Elmer Pub to the Regis School of Music.
We have tried to provide something for everyone. We have jazz, rock bands in the theatre, handbell ringers and an Argentinean Tango band. Some events are free, others are paid for.
Details of the various venues and performances are included in this programme. For more information call 01243 825535 or visit www.bognorregis.gov.uk/musicfestival
Jazz at the Beachcroft
The Beachcroft Hotel is situated adjacent to the promenade in Felpham. It has a reputation for excellent food and service and the restaurant is open to non-residents.
As part of the Music Festival, The Beachcroft is featuring a Jazz Night on Friday 28th July.
Enjoy Roasted Cod or Grilled Vegetable Platter, a glass of wine and listen to some ‘summer jazz’
Reservations can be made on 01243 827142
Take Five, who will be performing at the Beachcroft, play jazz in the modern style. The guys all met on a jazz course at Chichester College and have played together regularly since, both at the Beachcroft Hotel and the Spicy Tan.
They play ‘supper jazz’, never louder than people can eat, and with an emphasis on ‘standards’ that people know and love.

Eliza Carthy & the Ratcatchers
Thursday 27th July sees this Folk Icon come to Bognor Regis.
Daughter of folk legends Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson, her first recorded performance was at the age of 12. Since then she has gone from strength to strength, with bands the Waterdaughters (with her mother, aunt and cousin), The Kings of Calicutt and the Ratcatchers.
She is the winner of seven BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and has been nominated for the Mercury prize twice. In 2003 she became the first traditional English musician to be nominated for a BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music (for her album Anglicana)
Eliza has her own style, both in her music - “I’ve always done different things and I see doing a pop record and getting into new areas as a way of encouraging people to listen to English folk music”- and in appearance (wears trainers and changes her hair colour on a regular basis).
Although only just in her 30’s, Eliza has become one of the most dazzling and recognised folk musicians of a generation. She has revitalised the folk music genre, and made it more relevant to new audiences with her intelligent and charismatic performances.

Bognor Regis Handbell Ringers
Something a bit different
We have tried to include a variety of musical styles in the festival, and we are delighted that the local Handbell Ringers have agreed to be part of the activities.
Handbell ringing is an old tradition and the bells have a unique and beautiful sound. The origins of the group date back to 1945 when a teacher from Chichester High School for Boys, Ron Ashton, decided to form a local group. The Handbell Ringers entertain in and around the Bognor Regis area at the same time raising money for charity. For a number of years the group’s chosen charity has been the Macmillan Service at Midhurst and last year raised the sum of £1200 for them. The group play well known popular tunes and welcome the audience to join in and sing along if they so wish. The concert will last for approximately one hour.
Hotham Arts Centre
Sussex Folk Orchestra
Sussex Folk Orchestra is a group of musicians who meet to play traditional and contemporary folk music from around the world. Formed in 1999 (for the Millennium) the Orchestra numbers over 30 members.
The instruments include guitars, mandolins, bouzouki, fiddles, accordions, melodeons, concertinas, recorders, flutes, whistles, bodhrans and cellos.
Bognor Regis Concert Band
Bognor’s very own concert band, founded in 1989. A community band in every sense, it combines the talent of around fifty local musicians. Guided by musical director Howard Burchfield, the band plays a wide variety of music to suit all tastes.
One of the bands most popular performances is the annual Proms in the Park, when the band plays in the beautiful surroundings of Hotham Park. Audience participation is a must and the rousing strains of Sussex by the Sea and Jerusalem can be heard wafting through the summer air.
